Author Spotlight Series: Salathiel Murphy & “Taming the Flame”

Only 12-years-old at its release, author Salathiel Murphy writes about improper emotional expression and its connection to the act of bullying in Taming the Flame: A Story of Mastering Emotions (2022). Characters Drake & Halo teach readers of all ages the importance of managing emotions in a way that breeds kindness and healthy relationships.

Murphy caught up with Young Authors Publishing Assistant Editor, Brooke Shannon, to discuss writing from a personal place, Murphy’s television influences, and his advice as a young author.

Brooke Shannon: What inspired you to write your book?

Salathiel Murphy: For a period of time, I was bullied and had to learn to work through my emotions that resulted from that negative experience. So, my inspiration came from my personal story.

BS: What was one takeaway about writing you discovered while writing your book?

SM: It’s not easy writing a book. You have to do research to gain information on how to connect your story and potential readers.

"I hope readers understand the perspective of both the bully and the victim. Both perspectives are necessary in figuring out the best approach to stop bullying."

BS: Who is your favorite author and why?

SM: I don’t have a favorite author. But, I really enjoy anime. The emotional storylines of Japanese animation heavily influenced my narrative.

BS: What do you hope readers will take away from your book?

SM: I hope readers understand the perspective of both the bully and the victim. Both perspectives are necessary in figuring out the best approach to stop bullying.

BS: What advice would you give to young authors or creatives?

SM: I advise young authors to embrace the process, not just the result. Taking your time during the writing process only makes for a more creative story.
